What Olive Oil Should I Buy?
All of the Olive Pit Stop’s olive oils are carefully selected from across the globe , so you can be sure that if you buy olive oil from the Olive Pit Stop, it will be of the highest quality available in the UK.
But when tasting a olive oil, it helpful to think of olive oil as olive juice. A fresh olive oil can be pungent with a black peppery taste which dissipates in the back of your throat. This is because of the a constituent called oleocanthal, which has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory health benefits. If you get this taste when trying an olive oil, it is a good indicator that the olive oil is of a high quality.
Why Buy Olive Oil Online?
It only takes eight hours of exposure to florescent light for a bottle of olive oil in a clear glass bottle to completely destroy its flavours, colour and delicate aromas.
Even packaging oil oil in a darkened bottle will only extend its lifespan to a week in these storage conditions.
Unfortunately these are the conditions found in most supermarkets in the UK, and so purchasing from there will give you a sub optimal tasting experience, even with the worlds highest quality olive oils.
All of our olive oils are stored in darken and temperature optimised store rooms to best preserve their colours and flavours so you can enjoy each product to its best potential if you buy olive oil from us.
How Should I Store Olive Oil?
Unlike wine, olive oil does not improve with age. As the olive oil gets ages, it breaks down into oliec acid which gives the olive oil and acidic taste which overwhelms the olive oils natural flavour.
Olive oil has a high monounsaturated fat content compared to most other types of edible oils. This means that compared to these other oils, olive oil can be stored for longer, but only if it is stored properly!
The worst thing that you can do with a bottle of olive oil is to store it on the window sill in direct sunlight, or almost as bad, in a cupboard near to the stove.
Other than keeping out direct sunlight, it is important to keep the olive oil cool. In most UK kitchen this should not be an issue, but if you have a warm kitchen over 25 degrees Celsius, then consider putting the olive oil in the fridge.
If you do decide to refrigerate your olive oil, it can make the olive oil cloudy and solidify, but don’t worry, this will not affect the flavour or quality of the olive oil. Once the olive oil is returned to room temperature it will return to its colour and liquid consistency.
